Hey there! I'm a father of 2 and a seasoned lived experience educator who knows a thing or two about life without alcohol. With 9 years of sobriety under my belt, I can confidently say that quitting drinking took some serious stubbornness. Coaching can be a valuable resource for anyone who is looking to make positive changes in their life, achieve specific goals, or develop new skills. A coach can provide guidance, support, and accountability to help you stay focused and motivated as you work towards your objectives. Here are some reasons why you might want to consider using a coach:
-
Clarify your goals: A coach can help you define and refine your goals, so you have a clear sense of what you want to achieve.
-
Stay on track: With a coach, you have someone who can keep you accountable and help you stay focused on your goals, even when things get tough.
-
Build confidence: A coach can help you build your confidence by providing positive feedback and encouraging you to take risks.
-
Gain perspective: A coach can offer an outside perspective on your situation, which can help you see things in a new light and come up with fresh ideas.
-
Develop new skills: A coach can help you develop new skills and techniques to help you achieve your goals more efficiently.
-
While both coaches and therapists can help you make positive changes in your life, they serve different functions and are trained to address different types of issues. Here are some reasons why you might want to consider using an alcohol-free life coach instead of a therapist:
-
Focused on specific goals: A coach is typically focused on helping you achieve specific goals, such as reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption. A therapist, on the other hand, is generally more focused on addressing mental health concerns and underlying issues that may be contributing to your drinking.
-
Short-term approach: Coaching is often a short-term, solution-focused approach that can help you make changes quickly. Therapy, on the other hand, can be a longer-term process that involves exploring deeper emotional issues.
-
Action-oriented: Coaching is action-oriented and focused on developing concrete strategies to help you achieve your goals. Therapy may involve more reflection and exploration of past experiences and emotions.
-
No stigma: Some people may feel uncomfortable seeking therapy because of the stigma attached to mental health issues. Alcohol-free coaching, on the other hand, can be a more accessible and approachable option for those who want to make positive changes in their life without feeling stigmatized.

Yes, absolutely - in time.
Be patient and honest with yourself. If you don't feel up to being around people who are drinking as you're adjusting to it yourself, admit that and plan accordingly. There is nothing saying that you must be around people who choose to drink. You will know when you are ready!
Be straight that you don’t want a drink or be prepared with another response you’re confident in. There are multiple ways you can go with this depending on how comfortable you feel about the people you're with.
-
Have your repsonse prepped - If you're worried about this before you go to an event, be ready with your response. This will make it feel less awkward to you.
-
Be Confident - Remember that you are doing this for you and that you don't necessarily owe anyone an explanation.
You can always answer with, “I’m driving tonight.” Or come to them with, “I’m not feeling well and I don’t want to push it.” Sometimes I would answer with, “I don’t drink, thanks.” Leave it at that. You answer how you want to, and go into as much detail as you want to as well.

Over time your thinking patterns will change. Just like urges or cravings, thoughts about alcohol will slowly disappear. Remember you are changing behavior patterns, patterns that for some of us have been around for a long time. As you adapt to your alcohol free life, your thinking will drift away from drinking and toward your day to day activities.
It’s very cliche and can be frustrating to hear but again the key is to be patient with yourself and understanding. Of course you’re allowed to feel what you’re feeling (irritation, frustration, anxiety, etc.) but if you can find a way to throw those thoughts off, you will be able to move through them and into your every day.
